Coconut Creek Runs on Renewables Thanks to Republic

Republic Services and the City of Coconut Creek have launched Florida's first fully electric residential recycling and waste collection fleet.

“We’re excited to bring curbside recycling back to Coconut Creek, and in true Coconut Creek fashion, we’re having some fun with it,” Coconut Creek Mayor Jeffrey Wasserman says. “We’re kicking things off with a handful of community events that bring our residents together while showcasing the creativity and our innovative spirit that make our city so special”

Known as the "Butterfly Capital of the World," the City of Coconut Creek is home to approximately 58,000 residents and a thriving business community in northern Broward County. The city is recognized nationally as one of America's best places to live, even being a #1 retirement destination according to a 2026 report from Yahoo finance.

The new fleet serving Coconut Creek includes six McNeilus Volterra electric refuse and recycling collection vehicles. The trucks include 360-degree camera systems, enhanced driver visibility, lane-departure sensors, automated emergency braking and audible alerts designed to improve awareness for pedestrians and nearby motorists.

The new fleet aims to deliver quieter collection operations throughout Coconut Creek while maintaining recycling and waste collection services. 

Republic Services says it operates North America’s largest electric collection fleet, and the Coconut Creek electric vehicle (EV) fleet highlights how collaboration between municipalities and industry can help bring innovative, sustainable solutions to communities they serve.

Financial Analysis site Simply Wall St say this rollout reinforces Republic Services’ role as a large electric collection fleet operator in North America and highlights how municipal–industry partnerships can accelerate adoption of cleaner, tech-enabled waste services.

The Coconut Creek launch follows similar fully electric fleet deployments, such as the San Pablo, California rollout of McNeilus Volterra EVs earlier this year, underscoring fleet electrification as a key operational initiative. Together, these projects sit alongside Polymer Centers, RNG investments and digital fleet tools as potential contributors to future efficiency and margin improvement.
