GEM PRO: The Landfill Gas Analyzer You Never Have to Send Away

DiamondSci

If you've ever shipped a landfill gas analyzer back to the factory for a sensor swap or calibration check, you already know the math: the instrument is gone for days or weeks, your field schedule doesn't stop, and you're either renting a replacement or working blind. For most operators, that's just the cost of doing business.

The GEM PRO changes that calculation entirely. It's the first landfill gas analyzer designed so that you - or your field technician - can replace or add gas modules directly on site or in the field. No shipping. No downtime. No waiting.

This month, Diamond Scientific is proud to feature the GEM PRO as our Product of the Month, and we want to walk you through exactly what makes it different - and why it matters for your operation.

What Is the GEM PRO?

GEM PRO

The GEM PRO is a next-generation portable landfill gas analyzer built around a modular sensor architecture. Where conventional analyzers are fixed units - swap a sensor and you're sending the whole instrument to the manufacturer - the GEM PRO uses pre-calibrated sensor modules that field personnel can replace themselves, on location, without any specialist tools or factory return.

The instrument measures up to seven gases simultaneously and is configured by the operating system rather than hard-wired sensor combinations. That flexibility means you can adapt your analyzer to a changing site profile without buying a new instrument.

Key Features

Modular Design with Pre-Calibrated Sensor Modules

Every sensor module ships pre-calibrated with individual calibration certificates. When a module reaches end-of-life or needs recalibration, you order a replacement, swap it in the field, and your analyzer is back at full spec - no instrument downtime, no back-to-base service requirement. This is a fundamental shift from how landfill gas analyzers have traditionally worked.

Up to Seven Gases Simultaneously

The GEM PRO can be configured to measure:

  • CH4 (methane)
  • CO2 (carbon dioxide)
  • O2 (oxygen)
  • H2S (hydrogen sulfide)
  • CO (carbon monoxide) - with optional hydrogen compensation
  • H2 (hydrogen)
  • N2 (nitrogen / balance gas)

The hydrogen-compensated CO channel addresses one of the more persistent accuracy challenges in landfill gas analysis: hydrogen cross-gas effect on CO readings. When hydrogen is present above 10,000 ppm, uncompensated CO sensors can give misleading results. The GEM PRO's H2-compensated CO option eliminates that error source.

Records Static, Differential, and System Pressures

Pressure measurement alongside gas composition data is essential for landfill gas extraction system management. The GEM PRO records static pressure, differential pressure, and system pressure in a single reading - the same multi-parameter capture that makes it a direct replacement for compliance-grade instruments.

GPS Tracking and Data Logging

Built-in GPS ties each measurement to a precise geographic coordinate, building an automatic spatial audit trail across your wellfield. Combined with onboard data logging, every sample point is documented with location, timestamp, and full gas composition - exactly what EPA compliance submissions and carbon credit verification programs require.

WiFi and Bluetooth Communications

Wireless connectivity allows readings to be transferred directly to the GAMSoft software platform without physical cable connections. For large sites with multiple technicians, this simplifies data aggregation and reduces the administrative burden of compiling field data.

High-Definition Touchscreen and GAMSoft Software

A professional-grade HD 8" touchscreen makes field data collection faster and reduces transcription errors. The GAMSoft software platform handles configuration, data upload, live editing, and compliance reporting - with fewer manual steps between field collection and final report.

All-Day Battery Life with Swappable Pack

The rechargeable nickel-metal hydride battery pack delivers up to 6–10 hours from full charge, and is field-replaceable in Zone 1 hazardous areas. For teams working extended shifts or sites where charging access is limited, this is a practical operational advantage.

ATEX / IECEx Zone 1 Certification

The GEM PRO carries ATEX and IECEx Zone 1 certification (2G Ex ib IIA T1), meaning it is rated for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. This is a baseline requirement for many active landfill and biogas sites and removes a compliance barrier for operators working in enclosed or partially enclosed gas collection environments.

GEM PRO

Where the GEM PRO Works

The GEM PRO is built for the full range of landfill gas and biogas applications:

  • Gas extraction management on municipal solid waste landfills
  • Enhanced monitoring for carbon monoxide (CO) per Alternative Method 1E3
  • Anaerobic digesters on farms and food processing facilities
  • Breweries and food processing operations
  • Waste water treatment facilities
  • Water recovery facilities
  • Methane recovery and landfill-to-energy (LFGTE) projects

The combination of Zone 1 ATEX certification, H2-compensated CO measurement, and modular field-serviceable sensors makes it particularly well suited to higher-complexity sites where gas composition varies significantly between wells or where extended H2S exposure would accelerate sensor degradation in a conventional fixed-sensor instrument.

Why the Modular Design Matters: A Real-World Perspective

In over 42 years of selling and servicing landfill gas analyzers, the single most common operational pain point we hear from site managers is downtime. Not inaccurate readings. Not software issues. Downtime - specifically the window between when a sensor shows end-of-life behavior and when the instrument comes back from factory service fully operational.

For a site under active EPA monitoring requirements, that window creates real problems. You're either working with a degraded instrument and flagging the data quality in your compliance records, or you're renting a replacement at short notice.

The GEM PRO was designed specifically to close that window. Pre-calibrated modules mean the replacement sensor arrives ready to use - no field calibration required, no waiting for the instrument to be returned to spec. The calibration certificate comes with the module. You swap it, verify it, and you're back in the field the same day.

For operators running multiple sites or large wellfields where different wells may have very different gas compositions, the ability to reconfigure the sensor array without returning the instrument to the factory is an additional operational advantage that conventional analyzers simply don't offer.
